Bhagalpur, historically known as Champa Nagri, is a city in the Indian state of Bihar, situated on the southern bank of the Ganges river. It is the third largest city of Bihar by population and also serves the headquarters of Bhagalpur district, Bhagalpur division, and Eastern Range.
The Bhagalpur Ashram, established in the heart of the vibrant town of Bhagalpur, stands as a significant center for spiritual practice and devotion. Its origins are deeply intertwined with the arrival of revered spiritual figures Sree Sree 108 Swami Birajananda Bharati and His disciple, Shree Shree Radharani Devi (Sree Sree Ma) and the profound impact they have had on the region.
Before the ashram was established in the current building named Manohar Kutir, Sree Sree 108 Swami Birajananda Bharati along with Sree Sree Ma used to stay at the house of His disciple Sri Harendra Nath Das whenever they visited Bhagalpur. The foundation of the current Bhagalpur Ashram building traces back to the early 20th century, a period marked by a surge in spiritual awakening across India. It’s establishment is attributed to the generosity and devotion of Shree Lakshmi Pati Chattopadhyay, a dedicated disciple who donated his ancestral home for this purpose. On the 4th of Phalgun, in the year 1350 as per Bengali calender (which corresponds to 17th Feb, 1944 AD), the ashram building was formally inaugurated by Sree Sree 108 Swami Birajananda Bharati . This event was marked by elaborate rituals and a grand reception, reflecting the ashram's commitment to preserving and celebrating spiritual traditions. On the same day He named the ashram building as Manohar Kutir. This auspicious day marked the beginning of a new era for the ashram, infusing it with His divine presence and teachings.
One of the notable aspects of the ashram's daily life is its emphasis on selfless service and hospitality. The tradition of serving prasad (sacred food) to devotees and guests is carried out with immense devotion. The preparation and distribution of prasad, including a variety of dishes and sweets, is not just a ritual but a means of fostering community and spiritual bonding.
A crucial lesson imparted by Shree Shree Thakur during his time at the ashram was the importance of personal effort in spiritual practice. He often emphasized that while divine grace is essential, it must be accompanied by earnest personal endeavor. This principle was demonstrated through the ashram's daily activities, where devotees were encouraged to engage actively in service, meditation, and study.
The ashram's teachings also stress the significance of understanding and following the guidance of a spiritual teacher. Shree Shree Thakur's teachings often highlighted the importance of adhering to spiritual practices and the need for sincere effort in achieving spiritual goals.
The Bhagalpur Ashram remains a beacon of spiritual guidance and devotion. Its history is marked by the presence of revered spiritual figures who have profoundly influenced its growth and practices. Through its daily activities, teachings, and the warm hospitality extended to all, the ashram continues to serve as a sanctuary for spiritual seekers, fostering an environment of learning, devotion, and selfless service. The legacy of Shree Shree Thakur and Shree Shree Ma Janani continues to inspire countless individuals on their spiritual journeys, making the Bhagalpur Ashram a cherished center of spiritual life and practice.
