Manohar Sevashram Sangha: A Beacon of Service and Spirituality
The inception of the Manohar Sevashram Sangha in 1952 marked a transformative milestone in the realm of spiritual and humanitarian service. Founded under the guidance and inspiration of the revered Sree Sree 108 Swami Birajananda Bharati and Sangha Janani Sree See Ma, this institution was born from the realization that a collective, purposeful effort is necessary to bring about positive change in society. Sree Sree Thakur, known for His profound spiritual wisdom, often emphasized that individual efforts, though important, are limited in their scope. To effectively serve both humanity and the Divine, a unified force is essential and thus, He urged His followers to come together and form an organization dedicated to the well-being of all.
In the spirit of this vision, the Manohar Sevashram Sangha was established with the primary goal of spreading love, compassion, and service. The Sangha’s foundation is based on the profound philosophy of “Sarbadharma Samannay” (Unity of all religions) and the universal teachings of love, as propagated by Sree Sree Thakur , aiming to awaken a sense of divine consciousness in all. Sree Sree Thakur's message is clear—through mutual respect, service, and love, humanity can rise above its differences and connect with the Divine.
Key Ideals and Values
At the heart of the Manohar Sevashram Sangha are three essential pillars:
1. Moral Character – A strong emphasis on cultivating virtuous living is paramount. The Sangha believes that true spirituality is reflected in one’s actions and integrity.
2. Self-Confidence – The Sangha encourages individuals to believe in their inherent strength and capabilities, which is essential for both personal growth and contributing to the greater good.
3. Self-Reliance – Beyond spiritual enlightenment, the Sangha nurtures an environment where individuals are empowered to take charge of their lives, promoting independence and resilience.
Key Activities and Services
The Sangha has since undertaken a wide range of activities, all centred around its guiding principle of selfless service to society. Some of the key initiatives include:
Healthcare for the Needy: The establishment of the Sree Sree Gaurimata Dattabya Chikitsalaya (Charitable Clinic) in Sonathali, a rural area in Manbhum, stands as a testament to the Sangha’s commitment to healthcare. It offers free medical treatment to the poor and underprivileged, ensuring that no one is denied the care they need due to financial constraints.
Spiritual and Educational Outreach: Beyond physical service, the Sangha has made significant strides in promoting spiritual growth. The Sangha encourages daily prayers, scriptural study, meditation, and chanting, aimed at cultivating inner peace and divine awareness.
It also publishes a quarterly magazine, Sondhan, which carries the spiritual essence of the teachings of Sree Sree Thakur and Sree Sree Ma. The magazine aims to provide enlightenment akin to the sacred study of the Bhagavad Gita.
Another initiative is the Manohar Pathchakra which was started to facilitate monthly spiritual discourses in Kolkata, bringing together writers, journalists, scholars, and devotees to engage in discussions on spirituality and religious harmony.
Through a vibrant array of virtual programs held throughout the year, Manohar Sevashram Sangha fosters a global community of spiritual seekers.
• Devotees from all corners of the world engage in bi-weekly Satsangs, enriching their souls with the teachings of Sree Sree Thakur.
• In addition, once a week the Sadgranth Path program is conducted, where sacred texts such as the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam/Ramayan etc. are thoughtfully read and explained, allowing devotees to explore the deeper meanings and spiritual lessons embedded in these divine scriptures.
• The weekly Sree Guru Katha program offers disciples an opportunity to unravel the essence of divine teachings of Sree Sree Thakur, while special occasions like MahaShivratri and Bijoya Dashami inspire unique virtual gatherings, where devotees and disciples come together to reflect, share, and celebrate their Guru's timeless wisdom in the light of these auspicious events.
Community Support and Relief Efforts: While the Manohar Sevashram Sangha don’t have formalized relief centres, its commitment to service shines brightly in times of crisis. During natural calamities, such as floods or pandemics like COVID-19, the Sangha’s members have always risen to the occasion, taking swift and compassionate action. In these moments of dire need, they have actively reached out to remote villages and underserved areas, providing essential relief to those who are most vulnerable. Whether it’s distributing food, medical supplies, or offering a helping hand to rebuild lives, the Sangha’s members embody the spirit of solidarity, ensuring that no one faces hardship alone. Their selfless efforts in such challenging times reflect the true essence of their mission: serving humanity with love and compassion, especially when the world seems to stand still.
Cultural Revitalization: Along with its spiritual work, the Sangha places great importance on cultural preservation and development. This is achieved through the promotion of festivals, and spiritual practices that reinforce community ties and celebrate the cultural richness of the region. Every year Sangha organizes annual spiritual gatherings, such as the renowned Jayadev Mahotsav in the serene Kenduli village of Birbhum district, West Bengal. Over the course of three days, they provide a sacred opportunity for the divine Sadhu Vaishnav seva, enveloping the entire community in a deep spiritual embrace. As the night descends, the air is filled with the soulful tunes of Baul songs, where both established and emerging Bauls are given a cherished platform to perform. These gatherings not only nurture the spirit but also serve as a vibrant stage for the cultural heritage of the region, allowing the timeless art of Baul music to thrive and flourish. Through such celebrations, the Sangha beautifully intertwines spirituality with the preservation and promotion of rich cultural traditions, ensuring that both the past and the future of this art form are honoured.
Philosophy and Legacy
The Sangha’s philosophy is deeply rooted on the teachings of Sree Sree Thakur and the valuable guidance of Sree Sree Ma. Their collective wisdom has shaped the institution's ideology and approach to both spiritual growth and social service.
Sree Sree Thakur’s teachings have always emphasized that true religion is practised by living a life of truth, self-restraint and sacrifice. Sree Sree Ma’s advice resonates through the Sangha’s activities: “The true enemies are not outside, but within. Laziness, sleep, and delusion will pull you away from your goal. Through patience, perseverance, and a steady commitment to service, you will find true strength.”
She also emphasized the power of discipline: "Every task requires energy. Just as a vehicle runs on fuel, and a boat sails on wind, so too must humans find the strength to bring out their true humanity. This strength is tested in the service of others. Patience, endurance, and tolerance are where this strength resides."
One of her key teachings was the importance of unity and collective action. "In the battle with adversity, there are friends who will stand by you. Remember, no great work has ever been accomplished without enthusiasm, perseverance, and hard work. Take one step, and I will take ten steps for you," she said, highlighting the importance of mutual support and collective effort in fulfilling the mission of the Sangha.
The Sangha’s activities reflect this philosophy in action. Sree Sree Ma emphasized that spiritual growth is intertwined with service. The Sangha's "inner work" (puja, scripture study, meditation, and chanting) nurtures the soul, while its "outer work" (serving the needy, assisting in community welfare) nurtures society. The fusion of these practices makes the Sangha’s approach holistic, offering both spiritual nourishment and practical assistance.
A Future of Hope
With its strong foundation in both spirituality and service, the Manohar Sevashram Sangha continues to grow, touching lives across various walks of society. From its humble beginnings to its vast network of branches, celebrating religious festivals, providing community support , relief efforts and healthcare initiatives, the Sangha remains a beacon of hope, demonstrating that through collective action and spiritual guidance, a better world is possible.
The Sangha’s activities are a constant reminder that the path to true fulfilment lies not in selfish pursuits but in lifting others up, spreading love, and living with compassion. As Sree Sree Thakur and Sree Sree Ma envisioned, the Manohar Sevashram Sangha continues to be a centre of light, guiding individuals toward a more harmonious and purposeful existence.
